Understanding your result
The headline is how much more veneer plaster costs than drywall for your area, as a range, and the line under it gives the two totals. The tiles give each total and the finishing days for each; the bars put them side by side.
The drywall total is the site’s estimate for hanging and finishing to the level you chose, with your board price and region, the same as the cost estimator. The veneer total is the area times the published installed price range, adjusted for region and, for two-coat, by an estimate of 15% more. The difference is the low minus the low and the high minus the high.
Level 5 drywall is the closest finish to veneer, so comparing at Level 5 is the like-for-like view. Whether your room needs that level is on the finish level selector; a skim coat over existing walls, which is the drywall way to a plaster-like surface, is on the skim coat calculator.
How we calculate this
The veneer range spans the published figures from JourneymanHQ ($3.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed) into Fixr’s ($5 to $10); we cap it at $7.50 because Fixr’s top end reflects specialty work. Set times of 45 to 90 minutes per coat and decoration the next day come from Gold Bond’s product data, the Gypsum Association and trade guidance. Drywall figures are the site’s shared ranges, listed on the methodology page.
The assumptions behind the numbers
| Assumption | Default | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Veneer plaster installed | $3.50 to $7.50 per sq ft | JourneymanHQ ($3.50–5.00), Fixr ($5–10) |
| Two-coat | + 15% | Our estimate |
| Veneer set time | About 45 to 90 min per coat | Gold Bond product data; Gypsum Association |
| Decorating | The next day | Manufacturer and trade guidance |
| Drywall | Site’s cost ranges | Published cost surveys, 2024–2025 |
Assumptions last reviewed October 8, 2026.
The comparison does not price traditional three-coat lime or gypsum plaster on lath, which costs far more and takes weeks to dry, or Venetian plaster, a decorative finish. It does not account for the availability of plasterers, which in many areas decides the matter before the price does. The full comparison, including how each looks and wears, is in the drywall vs veneer plaster guide; what Level 5 drywall gives you is in the levels of finish guide.
Two worked examples
2,000 sq ft, Level 5 drywall against two-coat veneer
- Drywall to Level 5: $4,795 to $9,435 ($2.40 to $4.72 per sq ft)
- Two-coat veneer: $8,050 to $17,250 ($4.03 to $8.63 per sq ft)
- Difference: $3,255 to $7,815 more for veneer; finishing 6 days against 2
At Level 5, drywall is the same kind of surface for half the price. Veneer buys hardness and a shorter finishing week.
600 sq ft in a high-cost metro, Level 4 against one-coat veneer
- Drywall: $1,455 to $2,835
- Veneer: $2,940 to $7,200
- $1,485 to $4,365 more for veneer; finishing 5 days against 1
On a single room the finishing days matter more than on a house: the room is usable four days sooner.
Where to find your inputs
Area. Walls and ceilings, from the area calculators.
Drywall level. Level 5 for the like-for-like comparison; Level 4 for the usual painted room.
Veneer system. One-coat for most walls; two-coat for gloss paint or strong side light.
Region and board price. Where the job is, and your store’s price.
Common mistakes
- Comparing veneer with Level 3 drywall. Compare like with like: Level 5.
- Assuming plaster takes weeks. Veneer is decorated the next day; traditional plaster is the slow one.
- Veneer over regular drywall without a bonding agent. Use blueboard or the maker’s bonding system.
- Ignoring who is available. Get a quote from a plasterer before deciding.
- Forgetting the board. Veneer needs blueboard, not ordinary drywall.
- Expecting no cracks. Both crack where the framing moves.
Questions people ask
- Is plaster more expensive than drywall?
- Yes. Published guides put veneer plaster over blueboard at about $3.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed (JourneymanHQ) up to $5 to $10 (Fixr), against about $1.50 to $3.50 for drywall finished to Level 4. Fewer contractors do veneer, which raises prices further in some areas.
- What is veneer plaster?
- A system of a gypsum base board (blueboard) covered with a thin coat, about 1/16 to 3/32 in, of hard plaster. One-coat and two-coat systems exist; two-coat gives a harder, smoother surface for gloss paint or strong light.
- Is veneer plaster faster than drywall?
- For finishing, yes. Veneer sets in about 45 to 90 minutes and can usually be decorated the next day; drywall finishing takes a drying day per pass, four or five days for Level 4 or 5. Hanging the board takes about the same time.
- Is plaster better than drywall?
- Veneer plaster is harder and more resistant to dents, gives a smooth surface comparable to a Level 5 drywall finish, and has a solid feel. Drywall is cheaper, more widely installed and easier to patch. Most homes use drywall; veneer is chosen for durability or the look.
- Can you put veneer plaster over drywall?
- Veneer plaster is designed for blueboard, whose face takes the plaster's bond. Over regular drywall, a bonding agent is needed, and the manufacturer's guidance should be followed. Over existing walls, many plasterers use a bonding agent on the old surface.
- Does veneer plaster crack?
- Less than taped drywall joints in many cases, because the joints are taped and covered by the hard coat. Cracks still follow framing movement at corners and openings, as in any wall.
