Understanding your result
The headline is the labour range for the job, and the line under it restates the sheets, the area, the level and whether texture is included. The tiles give it per sheet, per square foot, and split into hanging and finishing.
The bars and the table show the stages: hanging, finishing to your level, and texture if ticked. The job factor in the table combines the ceiling share and the high-work premium; a job with a third of its board on ceilings is about 7% slower overall than all-wall work.
The notes put the price beside the wages of the people doing the work. A labour price divided by a loaded hourly rate gives the crew-hours it buys, which is a useful sanity check on a quote. The materials and total are on the cost estimator; how many hours the job really takes is on the time calculator; and whether to do part of it yourself is the DIY vs pro calculator’s question.
How we calculate this
The ranges are the site’s shared cost figures, from published 2024–2025 cost surveys (Fixr, HomeServe, Bob Vila, ThePricer, Inchcalculator), with the ceiling premium, high-work premium, level shares and regional multipliers as our stated estimates. Wages are the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook medians for May 2024. The figures and their sources are listed on the methodology page.
The assumptions behind the numbers
| Assumption | Default | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Hanging | $0.50 to $1.00 per sq ft | Published cost guides, 2024–2025 |
| Finishing to Level 4 | $0.80 to $1.50 per sq ft | Published cost guides, 2024–2025 |
| Level 5 increment | $0.50 to $1.50 per sq ft | ThePricer |
| Texture | $1.00 to $2.00 per sq ft | Inchcalculator, HomeGuide |
| Ceiling premium | 20% on the ceiling share | Our estimate |
| High work | + 15% | Our estimate |
| Wages | $58,140 (installers), $64,700 (tapers) median, May 2024 | US Bureau of Labor Statistics |
Assumptions last reviewed October 8, 2026.
The calculator prices labour only and does not include materials, demolition, framing or paint. It does not know your contractor’s minimum charge, which makes small jobs cost more per sheet. Per-sheet and per-square-foot pricing, and what is normally included, are explained in the guide to what contractors charge; splitting the job with a contractor is in the hang it yourself guide.
Two worked examples
60 sheets of 4 × 8 at Level 4, 35% on ceilings
- Area: 1,920 sq ft; job factor 1.07
- Hanging: $1,027 to $2,054; finishing: $1,644 to $3,082
- Labour: $2,671 to $5,136, $45 to $86 per sheet, $1.39 to $2.68 per sq ft
Hanging is about 40% of the labour and finishing 60%, which is why “hang it yourself, hire the taper” saves less than half the labour bill.
25 sheets of 4 × 12 at Level 3 with knockdown, lower-cost region
- Area: 1,200 sq ft; job factor 1.06
- Hanging: $509 to $1,018; finishing to Level 3: $611 to $1,145; texture: $960 to $1,920
- Labour: $2,079 to $4,082, $83 to $163 per sheet
The texture costs more than the finishing under it. Level 3 is enough under knockdown, and that is where the saving is.
Where to find your inputs
Sheets. From the sheet calculators or your order.
Finish level. The level in the quote or the one your paint and light need.
Ceiling share. Ceiling area over total board area; about a third in a typical room.
Region. Where the job is.
Common mistakes
- Comparing per-sheet prices for different sheet sizes. A 4 × 12 is half again a 4 × 8. Compare per square foot.
- Forgetting the ceilings. They cost more per sheet.
- Assuming texture is included. It is usually a separate line.
- Ignoring minimum charges. A ten-sheet job costs more per sheet.
- Comparing levels. Level 4 and Level 5 are different jobs.
- Judging by wage alone. A contractor’s price covers insurance, overhead and travel.
Questions people ask
- How much does it cost to hang drywall per sheet?
- Hanging alone runs about $0.50 to $1.00 per square foot in published guides, which is $16 to $32 per 4 × 8 sheet before regional and job adjustments. Ceilings, tall walls and stairwells cost more; many crews price ceilings separately.
- How much does it cost to tape and finish drywall per sheet?
- Finishing to Level 4 runs about $0.80 to $1.50 per square foot, $26 to $48 per 4 × 8 sheet, before adjustments. With hanging, a 4 × 8 sheet is about $42 to $80 of labour; the calculator adds ceilings, height, texture and region.
- What do drywall installers earn?
- The US Bureau of Labor Statistics gives a May 2024 median of $58,140 a year for drywall and ceiling tile installers and $64,700 for tapers. Contractor prices include overhead, insurance, travel and profit on top of the wage.
- Why do ceilings cost more to drywall?
- Overhead work is slower: the sheets are lifted and held, screwed at closer spacing, and finished on stilts or scaffolding. The calculator adds a 20% premium on the ceiling share of the board, our estimate of the difference.
- Do drywall contractors charge per sheet or per square foot?
- Both are common. Hangers often price per sheet hung, tapers per sheet or per square foot finished, and general contractors per square foot of board or of floor. Convert everything to per square foot of board to compare.
- Is texture included in drywall labour?
- Usually not; it is a separate line. Sprayed orange peel or knockdown adds about $1.00 to $2.00 per square foot in published guides. Tick the texture box to include it.
