How the estimates work

Read the full methodology

  1. Your walls and ceilings, minus the openingsEach wall's length times its height, sloped tops as trapezoids, ceilings measured separately, and every door and window taken out at its rough opening.
  2. Sheet size, orientation and wasteThe sheets are laid out the way a hanger would, fewest sheets first and then fewest butt joints, with a waste allowance that follows the room's shape, rounded up surface by surface.
  3. Fasteners and finishing by levelScrews come from Gypsum Association spacing, compound from manufacturers' coverage at your finish level, and everything is rounded up to whole boxes, pails, rolls and pieces.

Most drywall calculators divide square feet by 32 and stop. These measure the room the way an estimator does, count the joints as well as the sheets, change the compound with the finish level, and say which figure came from where: GA-216 for spacing, GA-214 for finish levels, GA-600 and the building code for fire and sound, makers' data for coverage, and dated surveys for cost. They count materials for non-load-bearing work; they never size a structure or promise a rating for an untested assembly.

Questions people ask first

How many sheets of drywall do I need for a 12 × 12 room?
A 12 × 12 ft room with an 8 ft ceiling, one door and one window has about 349 sq ft of wall and 144 sq ft of ceiling. In 4 × 8 sheets with 10% waste that is 12 sheets for the walls and 5 for the ceiling, 17 in all; in 4 × 12 sheets, about 12.
How many screws per sheet of drywall?
A 4 × 8 sheet on a wall with studs 16 in apart takes 28 screws at the Gypsum Association spacing of 16 in, and 35 on a ceiling at 12 in. With framing 24 in apart it is 25 either way. About one pound of 1-1/4 in screws covers seven wall sheets.
How much joint compound per sheet of drywall?
About 0.3 gallon of ready-mixed compound per 4 × 8 sheet for a Level 4 finish, from USG's published 9.4 gallons per 1,000 sq ft. A 4.5-gallon pail finishes about 15 sheets; a Level 5 skim coat raises it to about 0.45 gallon a sheet.
Should I buy 4 × 8 or 4 × 12 drywall?
Four by twelve sheets mean fewer butt joints, the hardest joints to hide, and fewer sheets to hang: a 14 × 12 ft room takes 12 instead of 18. But a 4 × 12 sheet of 1/2 in board weighs about 77 lb against 51 lb, and it will not turn up many staircases. Most jobs mix both.
What does it cost to hang and finish a sheet of drywall?
Published 2024–2025 cost surveys put labour to hang and finish a 4 × 8 sheet to Level 4 at about $42 to $80 at national-average rates, or roughly $54 to $92 a sheet with the board and materials. High-cost metros run 40 to 60 percent more.
How long does drywall mud take to dry between coats?
About 24 hours at 70 °F and 70 percent humidity, by USG's figure, and about 16 hours at 70 °F and 50 percent on our estimate. A cold, damp basement can take several days a coat. Setting-type compound hardens in its stated 20 to 90 minutes whatever the air.
