Drywall screw, nail and adhesive calculators

Screws and nails by sheet and spacing, adhesive tubes, furring strips and what an anchor will hold.

Fasteners are counted from a pattern, not guessed by the box. The Gypsum Association sets the maximum spacing along each framing member, 12 in on ceilings and 16 in on walls for screws, and a sheet crosses a fixed number of studs or joists. Multiply the two and you have the screws per sheet; multiply by the sheets and you have the job. These calculators print that pattern, convert the count into pounds and boxes, and show how adhesive lets you widen the spacing.

The same group covers the things that go on before and after the board: furring strips over masonry or an uneven ceiling, and the anchors that go into the finished wall when there is no stud where you need one.

Questions people ask

How many screws go in a sheet of drywall?
A 4 × 8 sheet hung horizontally on studs 16 in apart crosses seven studs. At 16 in screw spacing on a wall that is four screws per stud, 28 screws a sheet; on a ceiling at 12 in spacing it is five per joist, 35 screws a sheet. Many hangers screw walls at 12 in too, which makes 35.
What is the screw spacing on ceilings?
The Gypsum Association (GA-216) allows screws up to 12 in apart along each joist on ceilings, and 16 in on walls where framing is 16 in on centre. With adhesive on the framing the spacing can open to 16 in on ceilings and 24 in on walls.
What length of drywall screw for 5/8 in board?
A screw should go at least 5/8 in into wood framing. For 5/8 in board that means a 1-5/8 in screw; for 1/2 in board, 1-1/4 in. Double-layer 5/8 in board needs 2 in screws for the face layer. Into steel studs the screw only needs to pass through by 3/8 in, so 1-1/4 in fine-thread screws suit both thicknesses.
How much drywall adhesive do I need per sheet?
A 3/8 in bead down every stud the sheet crosses is about 28 ft of bead for a 4 × 8 sheet on 16 in framing. A 28 oz tube lays roughly 30 to 40 ft of 3/8 in bead, so budget close to one tube per sheet, or one 10 oz tube per sheet with a thinner bead.
How much weight can a drywall anchor hold?
It depends on the anchor and the direction of the load. Plastic expansion anchors in 1/2 in drywall are rated around 10 to 25 lb, self-drilling anchors 25 to 75 lb, and toggle bolts 50 lb and more in shear. Manufacturers rate anchors at failure, so the anchor calculator applies a safety factor and tells you when to find a stud instead.
