Drywall planning calculators

Drying time by conditions, a project schedule with real dates, finish level choice, dumpster size, drywall vs plaster, and delivery and lift planning.

The hanging is a day; the finishing is a week, and most of that week is waiting for compound to dry. A schedule that ignores the temperature and humidity in the room is fiction. These calculators turn the sheet count, the crew and the drying conditions into hours per phase and calendar dates, so the painter is booked for the right Monday.

The group also holds the decisions that are easier with numbers next to them: which finish level the room needs, whether veneer plaster would cost more, what size dumpster the tear-out needs, and whether boom delivery and a panel lift are worth it for the ceilings.

Questions people ask

How long does joint compound take to dry between coats?
Ready-mixed compound dries by evaporation: about 24 hours per coat at 70 °F and 70% humidity (USG) with some air movement, longer for thick fill coats and much longer in a cold, damp basement, where a coat can take two or three days. Setting-type compounds harden chemically in 20 to 90 minutes regardless of humidity, which is why they are used for the first coat when time is short.
How long does it take to drywall a room?
For a 12 × 12 room with 17 sheets, hanging is a day for two people. Taping and three coats of ready-mixed compound take about four working days, mostly drying time, then a half day of sanding and priming. Call it a week from bare studs to a wall ready for paint.
Which finish level do I need?
Level 4 for most painted walls and ceilings with flat or eggshell paint. Level 5 where a wall gets raking light from a large window or a wall-washer fixture, or where you will use a gloss or semi-gloss paint, because every ridge shows. Level 3 is enough under a heavy texture, and Level 2 is fine behind tile or in a garage or storage room.
What size dumpster for drywall removal?
Drywall weighs about 1.6 lb per sq ft at 1/2 in, so a 1,500 sq ft tear-out is about 2,400 lb plus the screws and trim, and a 10-yard dumpster handles it. Plaster and lath is two to three times heavier, and weight limits on dumpsters matter more than volume for this kind of debris.
How many trips to carry drywall in a pickup?
A half-ton pickup is typically rated for 1,500 to 2,000 lb of payload, which is about 30 sheets of 1/2 in 4 × 8 board or 20 sheets of 5/8 in. Twelve-foot sheets overhang the tailgate and need flagging. Above about 40 sheets, a boom-truck delivery that stacks the board inside the room is usually cheaper than your time.
